While solid and quite good at the kind of music they played, they were cock rock bands who should have been opening for Buckcherry and had nothing in common with Sound of Contact’s brand of elegant prog. I’m afraid the opening acts, Short Avenue and Three Quarter Stone, were a definite mismatch. I’m just saying, it might have been easier for casual prog listeners (if such a creature exists) to stumble upon the show at, say, the Opera House downtown. Not that the venue wasn’t clean and well set-up, but at Eglington and Danforth it’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere and attached to a strip club. I couldn’t help but think, upon arrival at the Rockpile East, that this venue was perhaps not the kind of place where this band should be playing. Let’s get the negative stuff out of the way first. Unfortunately, complications arose and the band were unable to play the originally announced show, but they finally were able to grace us in May 2014. I still can’t get enough of the bloody thing! When the first tour dates were announced, I quickly grabbed tickets to their first Toronto show. The album, a science fiction-laced progressive masterpiece, is among this writer’s favourite albums of all time. The first official line-up included Collins, Kelly Nordstrom (guitar, bass), Matt Dorsey (bass, guitar), and Dave Kerzner (keyboards).ĭimensionaut was released spring 2013. Although formed through sessions for vocalist/drummer Simon Collins’ third solo album, Sound of Contact came to be a band of its own shortly after. Just a word of warning for those of you who haven’t been following me since my wonderful run with Wave Maker Magazine: there’s one hell of a bromance going on in myself for progressive rock band Sound of Contact’s debut album Dimensionaut.

The ATL Jacob and FNZ-produced track, which samples Tems' 2020 song "Higher," crafted by production team Oddio, is the certified song of summer 2022. "Wait For U" Future featuring Drake and TemsĪ standard hallmark of a summer track is that it has to be heard everywhere, and there's no denying the ubiquity of Future's "Wait For U" featuring Drake and Tems. The menacing beat and his unique style make the song work toss in an energized Lil Baby on the remix and the banger travels even further.Ĭheck out the list below for even more music that soundtracked the heat from June to August. These are the best hip-hop songs of summer 2022. The track finds Sleazy putting his conversational flow to use. It feels good to hear Drake rhyme, plus 21's scene-stealing verse fits just right.Īs for the newer names taking over this summer, SleazyWorld Go caught a lot of traction with his viral single, "Sleazy Flow," which has nearly 50 million streams on Spotify between the original version and the Lil Baby remix. Plus, the track reunites 21 Savage and Drake, close friends and successful collaborators in the past. The woozy slow-burner about a relationship that is so bad, but feels better doesn't seem like something that fits the summer when both Future and Drake are in a serious, emotive lane, but it has absolutely been one of the biggest songs over these last few months. Another Drizzy track has also been on repeat as the sun's been sizzling. "Jimmy Crooks," the sole full-on rap song on his mostly house album, Honestly, Nevermind, has racked up over 130 million Spotify streams due to the change of pace it represents. "Wait For U," the Tems-sampling, Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper by Future and Drake, has been inescapable. This past few months also featured some big-time rap stars and a surprise newcomer making his presence felt. These two songs definitely define the summer of 2022. The track perfectly breaks down all the emotions tied to that while she whips up one of the most memorable hooks of the year. GloRilla is done with a man who doesn't meet her standards, and she puts the focus on herself and chilling with her friends. (Let's Go)" is a Memphis crunk song through and through, as opposed to Lizzo's flawlessly constructed pop-rap hit, but the two songs are two sides of the same coin. It's a fun listen and the built-in disco and funk references make it feel like a modernized version of songs from an earlier era. The self-empowering single about letting go and loving yourself after a tough time fits too well with the current state of, well, everything. 1 song in the country while fully encompassing the vibe of the summer. This summer has certainly found the ladies shining. As September nears, it's time to reflect on the summer songs that made a difference this year when hip-hop fans were returning to day parties, nightlife and everything in between. There aren't too many seasons directly tied to good times with good people like the summer is this becomes even more true as it gets closer to its end. A soundtrack to great, memorable moments. Music has always been a vehicle for better times. The collaborating institutions include Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, Stanford University, the University of Chicago and the University of Notre Dame.If there is one defining feature that makes Coherence stand out from many competing technologies, and allows you to write efficient distributed applications, this is it. Also listed as authors are Gerwin Koolstra, Ge Yang, Brennan Dizdar, Yizhong Huang and Christopher S. Schuster, a former physics professor at the University of Chicago now at Stanford University, and Xufeng Zhang, a former staff scientist at CNM and now a professor at Northeastern University. Other contributors include co-corresponding author David I. In addition to Jin, Han and Li, Argonne contributors include postdocs Xianjing Zhou and Qianfan Chen. The team has not yet fully optimized their electron qubit and will continue to work on extending the coherence time even further as well as entangling two or more qubits. This marks a pivotal stride toward two-qubit entanglement, a critical aspect of quantum computing. The team achieved a significant milestone by showing that two-electron qubits can couple to the same superconducting circuit such that information can be transferred between them through the circuit. Yet another important attribute of a qubit is its scalability to link with many other qubits. This time is well above the requirements for quantum computing. "The long lifetime of our electron qubit allows us to control and read out the single qubit states with very high fidelity," said Xinhao Li, a postdoctoral appointee at Argonne and the co-first author of the paper. That is about a thousand-fold increase from the initial 0.1 microseconds. As reported in Nature Physics, their work paid off with a coherence time of 0.1 milliseconds. "These attributes, along with coherence time, make our electron qubit exceptionally compelling."įollowing continued experimental optimization, the team not only improved the quality of the neon surface but also significantly reduced disruptive signals. "Thanks to the small footprint of single electrons on solid neon, qubits made with them are more compact and promising for scaling up to multiple linked qubits," said Xu Han, an assistant scientist in CNM with a joint appointment at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. The neon platform keeps the electron qubit protected and inherently guarantees a long coherence time. Neon is one of a handful of elements that do not react with other elements. The neon is important because it resists disturbance from the surrounding environment. The team's qubit is a single electron trapped on an ultraclean solid-neon surface in a vacuum. While there, he led the discovery of their new type of qubit, reported last year. Jin is a former staff scientist at the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), a DOE Office of Science user facility at Argonne. "This simplicity should translate into low cost in building and running large-scale quantum computers." "Among various existing qubits, electron charge qubits are especially attractive because of their simplicity in fabrication and operation, as well as compatibility with existing infrastructures for classical computers," said Jin, the lead investigator of the project. Because of that, they are called charge qubits. The team's qubits encode quantum information in the electron's motional (charge) states. The challenge is to safeguard the qubit against the constant barrage of disruptive noise from the surrounding environment. For any working qubit, maintaining this mixed state for a sufficiently long coherence time is imperative. Unlike classical bits, qubits seemingly can exist in both states, 0 and 1. However, in the quantum world, it represents a long enough window for a qubit to perform many thousands of operations. In everyday life, 0.1 milliseconds is as fleeting as a blink of an eye. "Rather than 10 to 100 operations over the coherence times of conventional electron charge qubits, our qubits can perform 10,000 with very high precision and speed," said Dafei Jin, professor at the University of Notre Dame with a joint appointment at Argonne's Center for Nanoscale Materials. The research was published in Nature Physics. They have extended the coherence time for their novel type of qubit to an impressive 0.1 milliseconds-nearly a thousand times better than the previous record. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has achieved a major milestone toward future quantum computing. In 1991, after the tour for Taking On the World had concluded, GUN entered the studio with producer Kenny MacDonald (who produced the band's debut album) to record their second record entitled Gallus, of which the single "Steal Your Fire" was a minor hit. Īlex Dickson eventually replaced Stafford but not before GUN departed to support The Rolling Stones on their 1990 European tour, supporting their Steel Wheels album. In late 1989, it was announced that GUN was to support The Rolling Stones on their 1990 Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour through Europe. All of the videos were compiled onto a commercially released video tape entitled "Taking On the World : THE VIDEOS". Videos were subsequently made for the songs "Inside Out", "Money (Everybody Loves Her)", "Taking On The World" and "Shame On You", as well as the aforementioned "Better Days". The album featured the single "Better Days" which was a hit in the UK, landing them the first of many appearances on television show Top Of The Pops. The album was released on 5 July 1989 to warm reception. Mainstream success Īfter the band had signed to A&M records in 1988, they began recording Taking On the World, the credited line-up being Mark Rankin on vocals, Guliano Gizzi on guitar, Stephen "Baby" Stafford on guitar, "Dante Gizzi" on bass, and Scott Shields on drums. Tours with Bon Jovi and Def Leppard followed shortly after. Gun toured the US and supported The Rolling Stones on their European Urban Jungle Tour of 1990. The single "Better Days" from the album made the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart. Rankin's cousin Sharleen Spiteri, of fellow Scottish band Texas and ex drummer Thornton contributed backing vocals to several songs on the album. Debut album Taking On the World was also released this year. In the studio, Jim McDermott (Kevin McDermott Orchestra, Simple Minds and The Silencers), provided drums on the albums Taking On the World and Gallus. Signed in 1988 by A&M Records the band line-up changed after Thornton, Morlotti and Aitken parted company with them and new recruits Dante Gizzi, Scott Shields and Baby Stafford joined. Originally called Blind Allez, then for a short time 'Phobia', GUN were formed in 1987 by Giuliano Gizzi (guitar) and Cami Morlotti (bass), with Mark Rankin (vocals), Alan Thornton (drums) and David Aitken and Gary Moore (guitar). The band continues to tour and record, and recently celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2019 with a new compilation album, R3L0ADED, and a sold-out show at Glasgow's Barrowland Ballroom. With this new line-up, Gun released three more albums in the 2010s: Break the Silence (2012), Frantic (2015) and Favourite Pleasures (2017), which became their first top-20 album since 1994. After recording a new EP in 2009, Jepson left the band the following year, and Dante Gizzi moved from bass to become Gun's new lead singer. įronted by Mark Rankin for their first four albums, the band disbanded in 1997, but reformed in 2008 with Little Angels singer Toby Jepson taking over lead vocals. The most successful of these was a cover of Cameo's " Word Up!", which reached the top 10 in 1994. Starting in 1989 with Taking on the World, Gun have released seven studio albums, three of which have made the UK Top 20, and had eight UK Top 40 hit singles. The band currently consists of brothers Dante Gizzi (lead vocals) and Giuliano "Jools" Gizzi (guitar), along with Paul McManus (drums), Andy Carr (bass) and Davie Aitken (guitar). If he can cross it, he should make his way down the railroad tracks leading out of the city. Together, Montag and Faber make their plans for escape. He phones in a fire alarm and then waits until the blare of the siren is heard before he continues on to Faber's. Thus, Montag activates the plan to frame firemen that he had previously sketched for Faber. Because Black was responsible for burning many other people's homes, Montag reasons that Black should have his own home burned. He stops at the home of a fellow fireman - Black's house - and hides the books that he has been carrying in Black's kitchen. Montag makes one stop prior to his arrival at Faber's home. Unharmed (except for one-sixteenth of an inch of black tire tread on his middle finger), he travels onward. A fortuitous stumble allows Montag to escape certain death. As he's crossing the street, one vehicle focuses on Montag's running figure. He must either risk crossing the boulevard or face certain execution in a matter of minutes. (Recall that Clarisse was killed by a hit-and-run driver.) In Montag's case, the danger is compounded because he has a crippled leg, deadened with procaine.ĭespite the danger, Montag has little choice he must cross the boulevard in order to reach Faber. Because the automobiles travel at such high speeds, crossing the street is extremely dangerous - coupled by the fact that, because such little value is given to a person's life, running over pedestrians is a sport. In his journey to Faber's, Montag confronts an unforeseen danger: crossing a boulevard. On his way to Faber's house, Montag discovers that war has been declared upon his town. Only Faber holds some promise for Montag's survival.ĭespite the urgency, Montag rescues some of the books that he hid in his backyard (Millie burned most of them, but she missed a few). The police, Montag is sure, with the aid of helicopters, will immediately begin a manhunt. He is now a hunted man, sought by the police and the firemen's salamanders. In the span of only a few minutes, Montag becomes a criminal, an enemy of the people. In one quick motion, Montag turns the liquid fire on Captain Beatty, who collapses to the pavement.Īfter pummeling Stoneman and Black, Montag tries to escape, but the Mechanical Hound stuns him in the leg with its procaine needle. While Montag hesitates, Beatty discovers the green bullet in his ear and threatens to track the two-way radio to its source (Faber).Īs if motivating Montag to take action against him, Beatty taunts Montag relentlessly. Montag has also fallen into his former way of thinking as a result of Beatty's verbal assaults and the trauma of what has happened to both himself and his home. Meanwhile, Faber continually urges Montag to escape, but Montag is hesitant because the Mechanical Hound is on the prowl. Little does he realize that Montag finds a certain perverse satisfaction in torching the interior of his home - especially the television screens. While Beatty seems to regret what he must do to Montag, he taunts Montag in a mean-spirited way and reminds Montag that he has given him many warnings about what could happen.įinally, in his conversation with Montag, Beatty forces Montag to set fire to his own home. The nkoda music library, one of the two apps that the company has developed, is where this music can be found - built-in content that every nkoda subscriber enjoys access to. It provides virtual access to a music library containing the digitised catalogues of 140 publishing partners, including the likes of Breitkopf & Härtel and Faber Music. Nkoda is, at its heart, a digital sheet-music service. Nkoda certainly offers a different combination of features, but there’s sufficient overlap between its package and OnSong's that fans of the latter will want to know just how the former might benefit their practice. Many of the best features are available on the Premium plan only, and - speaking of the App Store - OnSong is only compatible with Apple devices, meaning that Android-users won’t be able to capitalise on the service. As a cursory glance on the App Store will show you, many users report persistent technical issues with the OnSong app, which does compromise its reliability - not ideal in live performance.Musicians more accustomed to performing with staff notation as opposed to lyrics and chord diagrams will find that the app’s features complement their material less effectively - OnSong is very much geared towards song performance specifically.Given that OnSong is such a practical technical solution to your musical needs, the subscriptions are ultimately quite reasonably priced. The live facilities in particular are second-to-none among OnSong’s competitors you won’t find an app so easily available that can simplify and enhance the quality of your performances. OnSong’s carefully configured service can really transform your music-making - the app’s supplies a comprehensive selection of features that are genuinely useful and convenient, designed by a team that clearly understands the plight of the practising musician.Wide-ranging live performance tools include: transposition, capo, metronome, MIDI attachments, autoscroll, stage-lighting integration, backing-track audio, lyrics projection, and more.Manage multiple file versions, edit lyrics, chords and metadata, view and play back chord diagrams, and add sticky notes, graphics and other annotations to your titles.Organisational features allow you to store, arrange and access musical materials, as well as backup, share, export and print - this can be done not only through the app but also through a web browser.Group subscriptions are also available, tailored to the needs of a range of ensembles and institutions. Priced at 23.99 and 47.99 per year respectively, each offers a unique combination of features, though you can try out some basic features for free. The OnSong service is available at two tiers for individual users: essentials and premium. It’s all presented with a new look in the 2022 app, which is compatible with Apple devices only. Of course there are the obligatory metronome and transposition tools, too. All your audiovisual materials can be arranged in setlists, MIDI devices can be integrated with the app, and aspects of live practice, such as managing stage-lighting and sound levels, can all be controlled through the app. There’s real emphasis on the performative aspects of musicianship with OnSong. Arrange all your resources in one place, in whichever way suits best. External files can be imported and marked up in the same way, and it’s possible to attach various media to each item. The app enables users to write songs with text, chord symbols, colours and annotations. And through a wide range of tools supported by the app’s software, an impressively inclusive range of musicians is catered to - sound therapists, singer-songwriters, gigging players, to name just a few. Its service concentrates on providing the means to create, curate and customise musical materials, whether for practice, performance or sheer personal convenience. Just like that iconic tool, OnSong is a versatile package, entailing a wide range of features to streamline and enhance the music-making experience, and ultimately facilitate easier access to your songbook. OnSong legitimately describes itself as the Swiss Army Knife of music apps. This would be compatible with both 32 bit and 64 bit windows. This is complete offline installer and standalone setup for Telestream Wirecast Pro.
